These are the summer hours. The sign on the door is headed "Welcome Summer", so treat them as seasonal until the winter ones are confirmed.
A 6,000 square foot nature center inside Deep Creek Lake State Park. Aquariums of fish out of the lake, an aviary of nine raptors that can't be released, a walk-through replica coal mine, and reptiles. It costs nothing to walk in, though you pay to get into the park.

The center is free but the park gate is not. Budget the day-use fee on top.
The 1884 B&O depot in the middle of Oakland, restored and run as a railroad museum. Model trains, telegraph equipment and station fittings inside; a Baldwin steam locomotive and a caboose parked outside. Open every day, which almost nothing else here is.

Riding lessons and pony rides run year-round in the indoor arena. Trail riding is April to November.
A 300-acre farm with a heated indoor arena, which makes it the one place around here a small child can sit on a horse in February. Pony rides are $25 and run inside; trail riding, farm tours by off-road buggy, cabins and a pavilion are the rest of it.
Everything is booked ahead. There are no drop-in hours published and no opening times at all.
The county library, five branches, free to walk into. On a wet afternoon it's the most reliable indoor room in Garrett County: warm, quiet, has a bathroom, and nobody minds how long you sit there. Every branch keeps different hours, and three of the five shut at lunchtime on Saturday.

The Friendsville branch is not on Chestnut Street right now. It's operating from the Friendsville Senior Center at 947 Community Drive while the building is renovated.
The county historical society's main museum, in downtown Oakland. Two hundred years of Garrett County in one building: the B&O Railroad, the Oakland and Deer Park hotels, the schools, the opera house, the coal mines.
Closed Sunday through Tuesday. Four days a week is easy to get wrong on a weekend trip.
6 May 2026 through the Autumn Glory Festival. Shut for the winter.
Two floors of how people and things moved around this county: carriages, sleighs, automobiles, boats, fire equipment. The upstairs gallery is given over to the history of Deep Creek Lake itself. Open for the warm half of the year only.
Shut all winter. The 2026 season runs 6 May to Autumn Glory, so a January trip is wasted.

Check the hours before you drive
This is the one part of the county where turning up unannounced doesn't work. Most of these open four days a week. One shuts from October to May. The Discovery Center doesn't publish hours at all, just a phone number.
So hours sit at the top of every card and every page here, and where I don't know them it says so instead of implying you're welcome.

Three of these publish hours on their own site but no admission price at all. That's not an oversight on my end — it's genuinely not published, and the calls are on the list.
Why a library is in here
Because on a wet Tuesday it's the most reliable indoor room in the county. Free, warm, has a bathroom, and nobody minds how long you stay. The five branches all keep different hours, which is exactly the kind of thing that's a nuisance to look up five times, so they're in one table.
