A 13-acre lake on the site of a nineteenth-century milling settlement, wrapped inside Savage River State Forest. Eleven cabins, a groomed cross-country ski network in winter, and enough elevation that it holds snow when the rest of Maryland has none.

Where things are
- Cabins
- Twelve log cabins, bookable year round, each with electric heat, a wood stove, a full kitchen and a bathroom. Pets are allowed in cabins 3 to 7 only.
- The campground
- Forty sites. Site 34 has 30-amp electric. The Alpine Lodge (site 40) is an Adirondack-style shelter sleeping ten. Sites 3 and 31 are safari-style glamping tents on raised platforms.
- Showers
- The White Oak Loop shower house is heated and open year round. It's pet friendly.
- The lake
- Thirteen acres, with a designated swimming area and a free swim beach. Kayaks, canoes and paddle boards to rent at the Lake House or Ranger Station. Gasoline motors are prohibited.
- Trails
- More than ten miles, easy to moderate, well signed and intersecting often so you can shorten a route.
- Shelters
- Two picnic pavilions. Tall Oaks takes 75 and has a wood-burning fireplace; Tamarack takes 40 and sits by the playground.
- Indoors
- The Black Forest Room in the Lake House holds 60 and can be reserved. The gift shop in the Ranger Station sells firewood, licenses and clothing, 8am to 4pm daily, year round.
- Winter
- Trails are tracked and groomed for skiing. Skis and snowshoes to rent. Ice fishing is allowed on the lake. They call the sledding hills the Maryland Alps.

- Annual pass
- Maryland State Park and Trail Passport — $75 a year, $100 for non-residents. Covers day-use entry statewide. Where it can be bought in the county is not confirmed.
